Barry Bracken
Counsellor & Psychotherapist
I’m Barry – a fully accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with over six years’ experience. I hold a Master’s in Counselling and Psychotherapy, together with additional qualifications in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy, and a specialist diploma in Non-Directive Play Therapy.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent almost 20 years as a primary school teacher, including many years working in special education. During this time, I supported children experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, helping them to develop emotional regulation, build confidence, strengthen friendships and navigate the challenges of school and everyday life. This experience has given me a deep understanding of child development, family dynamics and the importance of creating a safe, trusting relationship where children can feel accepted and understood.
My background in education has naturally shaped my work as a play therapist. Using non-directive play therapy, I provide children with a safe and nurturing space to express themselves through play—their natural language of communication. Rather than directing the process, I follow each child’s lead, helping them to process difficult emotions, develop resilience and build confidence at their own pace. I believe that when children feel truly seen, heard and accepted, they are better able to overcome challenges and thrive.
Alongside my work with children, I support adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship issues, trauma and life transitions. I work in an integrative and collaborative way, tailoring therapy to meet each person’s individual needs and goals. Whether you’re seeking short-term, solution-focused support or longer-term therapeutic work, I aim to create a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you feel comfortable exploring whatever has brought you to therapy.
I have a particular passion for supporting men’s mental health and take a holistic approach to wellbeing, recognising the connection between our emotional, physical and psychological health. I believe every person has the capacity for growth and change, and I feel privileged to walk alongside my clients as they gain greater self-awareness, overcome challenges and create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
