EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy approach that is particularly effective in helping people heal from trauma, PTSD, and other emotionally distressing experiences.

Rather than focusing heavily on talking through the trauma, EMDR helps the brain process and “reorganise” distressing memories so they no longer feel as emotionally intense or disruptive.

How Does It Work?

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—most commonly guided eye movements, though tapping or sound may also be used. This stimulation activates both sides of the brain while the person briefly recalls a traumatic or difficult memory.

The process helps the brain do what it naturally does during REM sleep: digest and file away emotional memories. Over time, the memory becomes less vivid and distressing, and people often feel they can move forward without being “stuck” in the past.

EMDR Can Help With:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Childhood trauma
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Grief and loss
  • Phobias
  • Negative self-beliefs or low self-esteem
  • Disturbing life events (e.g., accidents, medical trauma, bullying, relationship breakdown)
