An Introduction To Working With Neurodivergent Couples
A Two-Day Introductory Workshop
A Two-Day Introductory Workshop

Working with neurodivergent couples requires an understanding of how neurodivergence can shape communication, emotional regulation, connection, conflict and the everyday dynamics of a relationship. While many traditional approaches to couples work offer valuable foundations, they may need to be adapted to reflect the unique experiences, needs and strengths of neurodivergent individuals and their relationships.
This two-day introductory workshop is designed for practitioners who want to develop their understanding, confidence and practical skills in working with neurodivergent couples. We will explore the fundamentals of couples work alongside the adaptations that can help make therapeutic spaces more accessible, affirming and effective for neurodivergent partners.
Throughout the workshop, we will examine key concepts and relational dynamics, including how a Persistent Drive for Autonomy (PDA) may present within a couple relationship, how Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) can influence communication and conflict, and how different trauma responses may emerge within neurodivergent relationships. We will also explore the impact of executive functioning differences on shared responsibilities, daily life, expectations and relationship dynamics.
A central focus of the workshop will be developing practical strategies to support more effective communication between partners. Participants will gain tools to help couples navigate misunderstandings, recognise differing needs, manage moments of conflict and build greater understanding and connection.
By the end of the two days, participants will have a foundational understanding of the unique considerations involved in neurodivergent couples work, alongside practical skills and approaches they can begin to integrate into their practice.
This workshop aims to move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to couples therapy, supporting practitioners to work collaboratively with neurodivergent couples in ways that honour individual differences, strengthen relationships and foster meaningful connection.
